History

An All India Coordinated Research Project on Oilseeds (AICORPO) was set up in 1967 for coordinating research on five major oilseed crops (groundnut, rapeseed-mustard, sesame, linseed, and castor). Later in 1972, three more oilseed crops (safflower, niger, and sunflower) were added to the charter. The AICORPO got a further fillip in 1977 with the elevation of the then Project Coordinating unit to the status of the Directorate of Oilseeds Research (DOR) with approval of position of Project Director and seven Crop Coordinators to assist the Project Director in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the research programmes of the respective crops. The AICRP-Groundnut with its headquarters at PKV, Akola, continued to function under the banner of All India Coordinated Research Project on Oilseeds (AICORPO).

Looking into the major contributions of groundnut to the oilseeds basket of India, in 1992 (beginning of VIII-Plan), groundnut was delineated from the AICORPO and given an independent status as All India Coordinated Research Project on Groundnut (AICRPG) and its headquarters was shifted from PKV, Akola in Maharashtra to the National Research Centre for Groundnut (NRCG), Junagadh in Gujarat to facilitate an effective interaction with the scientists of NRCG.

Jointly with the scientists working at SAUs, the AICRP-G plans, conducts and co-ordinates multidisciplinary research on groundnut crop to develop technologies for enhancing productivity of groundnut in various agro-climatic conditions.

Currently there are 22 regular centres (5 main and 17 supporting) at strategic locations spread across the country. The research is conducted on crop improvement, crop production and crop protection aspects of groundnut in addition to organizing Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) on improved technologies. AICRPG also coordinates production of breeder seeds and annually, about 15,000 q of breeder seed comprising 50 groundnut varieties is produced.
